It's Never A Good Sign . . . .

It's never a good sign when the teacher says that she needs to talk to you after school about your preschooler. Jeez!! I expected "the talk" early on with Kyla but I figured we'd at least be in Elementary before it happened with Isabelle . . . . .
Long story made short . . . . . Isabelle is becoming more & more defiant in class and today, had a complete meltdown that was a disruption to everyone (which is why they needed to talk to me). We've noticed that she has been gradually more & more pushing the limits (which includes pushing her sister) and then having a meltdown when you try to impose a consequence. Bedtime routines used to be smooth but have turned into a nightmare. It started with needing the door open, then she needed to go to the bathroom 20 times and then she needed more water . . . . . you get the picture.
The teacher's suggested that this type of behaviour (let's call it "Princess Syndrome") is pretty common with children who are the eldest because they are catered to more than the younger ones. She suggested that we don't give in when asking Isabelle to do something (and she's not cooperating) and if needed, just let her have the tantrum but again, don't give in.
Now that Isabelle is at an age that she can reason, I have found myself "negotiating" with her more to prevent tantrums (or to stop them) but obviously, that approach is not working. Time for a new approach . . . . . . I'll let you know how it goes!!

  1. Uh oh! :) At least she had good parents to guide her through.
