Even though I worked in the retirement industry for a number of years, I can't actually say that I have been to that many 100th birthday parties. Maybe 4 or 5.
On February 28th, Alan's Grandpa turned 100 years old so the entire family gathered in Victoria to wish him well. He had been taken to a hospice a few days earlier so on the big day, we all crowded into his room, sang Happy Birthday, opened a few important cards (such as a congratulations from the Queen) and ate some cake.
The night before the party, Alan & the kids and I (along with Paul & Kristine & their kids) were able to go down to the hospice and spend a bit of time with Grandpa. He LOVED seeing the great grandchildren - especially the babies, Elizabeth & Kendra. Kendra was in a pretty good mood so for most of the visit, she was happy to sit with her Great Grandpa and chew her dress.
We flew home on March 1st and two days later, we received word that Grandpa passed away on March 2nd. We feel extremely lucky that we were able to spend his last days together as a family celebrating his life.
Granny & Grandpa with their grandkids - only Scott & Kent from Australia were missing.
The Great Grandchildren that were able to attend. Only a couple were missing. Two days after Grandpa died, another Great Grandson was born and there in ANOTHER Great Granddaughter arriving in Australia later this month.
A giant cake to feed a giant family!
